Vaccine Storage Rule – See Why Vaccines Fail!

Did you know that not all refrigerators are certified to be a vaccine storage refrigerator? All of the vaccine storage and handling guidelines you know before may not be sufficient. This is why I want to open your eyes to see some of the storage and handling guidelines you probably didn’t know. For vaccines stored in freezer, it is important for us understand the vaccine cold chain. You also need to know the components of cold chain, as well as the importance of cold chain. Follow me as I show you these critical information about the complex process of vaccines storage

Vaccine Storage and Temperature Requirements

There is a general belief that to maintain cold chain, vaccines must be kept in cold storage, but that isn’t enough. Vaccines storage is not all about keeping vaccines in a freezer because even excessive freezing can destroy vaccines. If that shocks you, how about this? The World Health Organization, in June, suspended the use of 8 vaccine fridges manufactured by Vestfrost. This is due to the fact that the fridges had a tendency to freezing and failed to meet the criteria for temperature control. Furthermore, there is a recent update on the matter on WHO site stating the conclusion of the issue of concern.

Did you know that most vaccines stored in freezer need to be kept in a cold chain ranging between 2°C and 8°C? During vaccine storage, not only is keeping vaccines at higher temperatures bad, lower temperatures can also destroy them.

The Storage Cold Chain

Let me break this terminology down a bit. All personnel involved in the production, transportation, storage, and administration of vaccines must be able to keep it within the required temperature range throughout the entire process. For this reason, it is important to keep most vaccines between 2°C and 8°C? whether in storage or in transit. The cold chain as explained here is therefore critical in meeting vaccine storage and handling guidelines. This explains the need for a special vaccine storage refrigerator for vaccines stored in freezer.

The Importance of Cold Chain – Vaccine Storage

First, cold chain is a temperature range that favors the potency of a vaccine agent during vaccine storage. That is, outside the cold chain, these vaccines are rendered inactive by the weather. Whether you are over-freezing or subjecting your vaccines to temperatures higher than the cold chain, you are killing the agent.

Using a vaccine after breaking the cold chain rule causes vaccine failure. However, most farmers will assume effective vaccination of their animals without knowing that the vaccination was without effect. So, in order to properly guide animals against diseases, the cold chain remains a necessity.

How To Save Your Investments

If you have chosen the way of vaccination then you should be willing to give it all that it takes. One of the most important things to note is that not every vaccine retail seller will follow the rules. That is under the assumption that they know all the rules. So, in your own interest, only purchase your vaccines from reputable sources. By this you will be able to ensure that the vaccine is still intact. Remember, the power supply in Nigeria on it’s own does not support proper vaccine storage. I wish you all the best in your farming endeavors.

  • I never knew that when getting vaccines, I have the right o know how it was stored and handled. My sister is afraid of vaccinations but I think that helping her understand hat she can do this type of research will help her out. I will have to look more into the storage methods in my local hospital, but I am grateful for your advice about asking to see temperature logs and the expiration date of the product.

  • Dear Mr Opeyemi,
I’m a seasoned and ardent follower of yours and also a poultry fanatic like you are, I’ve gained a lot from your site and from many other sources too. Thanks for your help and support. I’ll also like to suggest that if you can create an avenue where poultry farmers can meet and discuss things, share ideas and suggestions on various experiences, it’d go a long way in helping us. Thanks

    • Thank you very much, Mr Yusuf.

I will soon open a public telegram group for readers to join. I currently manage group where I add those who buy my resources, for further guidance. But I think it's time to go public on some ideas

  • Thank you so much sir, you know people are trust worthy so as to maintain the vaccine cold chain.
My question is, is there any preventive measure to avoid the damage of the vaccine failure.
    Thanks, costell from Enugu.

  • The solution is to buy from reputable places. We are also hoping that someday we have access to vaccines that don't need cold chain in Nigeria.
