Truth is, I will not advise anyone to start organic poultry farming on a large scale. You need to start small and grow from there. Reason is, the thought of gathering herbs can be overwhelming, but don’t get me wrong. Because it’s worth it! So, instead of having to struggle with finding herbs in large amount, you will find it easy when you start with a few hundreds of chickens.
Most farms that operate organic chicken farming have their own pasture. This allows them to provide their organic chickens with the desired plants and shrubs.
Trust me, most of the herbs you will need can be found near you. But this is not to say that they are all at your backyard already. In case a few of them are not so close to you, all you need is to ask around. If you belong to a farmers community like mine, you might be able to get some herbs through others. My advise is that herbs that are not found close to you should be purchased in large quantities.
A lot of people ask me this question. Truly, organic chickens need free range but you can also have naturally raised chickens without a pasture. They cannot be called organic chickens but they are naturally raised. This already settled the health reason for doing organic poultry farming. Currently in Nigeria, the is a growing number of farmers rearing naturally raised chickens, especially broiler chickens. This means that with your cages and deep litter, you can have naturally raised chickens using herbs and spices.
I am going to give a very loud YES to that. In fact, you can also get Natural Growth Promoters for your broilers. There is a lot for you to get when raising your chickens naturally. You can also get them to attain a weight of over 3.5 KG within eight weeks as discussed here.
So, for any question you might throw, organic chicken farming appears to be the new RIGHT in town. And if not for anything else, we deserve to eat right.
If you need someone to help you through the process of adopting the organic method, you are in the right place. You can also consider getting my Complete Guide to Organic Poultry Farming eBook (pdf).
